Your trainer, Peter Robertson, has spent most of his career with the BBC working on the national bulletins in London, with correspondents such as Jeremy Bowen, Kate Adie and John Simpson. He was one of the launch editors for the rolling international news channel BBC World in 1992. He has covered some of the biggest national and international stories of the era such as the wars in former Yugoslavia, the end of the Cold War, Lockerbie and the Dunblane massacre.
He ended up Head of Geographic Group at BBC Monitoring, a board-level position responsible for global coverage of open source media for BBC News, UK/US governments and commercial clients. He was responsible for 200 UK and non-UK staff with a budget of £6m in 12 offices, plus a network of 215 freelancers working in dangerous environments such as Afghanistan and Somalia.
The role entailed a lot of travel to countries such as the USA, Russia, Kenya, Uzbekistan, Egypt and Ukraine to name but a few. As well as bringing the necessary highly-tuned interpersonal skills and sensitivity to operate within a multi-cultural and international environment, he has had to cope with death threats, revolutions, armed raids and invasions.
Peter now runs his own consultancy A Big Wide World Ltd. and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s From Our Own Correspondent.
Senior editor at BBC Monitoring
Peter is one of those rare bosses, striking just the right balance between autonomy and support, and always listening. Often thousands of miles away, he was always within reach when I needed advice. I felt completely trusted to make the right decision, which of course helped to do exactly that.

Experienced FP&A and Change Management Professional
Whilst working with Peter both in his capacity as the Head of the Gagarin Region and Head of the Geographic Group, he always provided professional guidance and support and showed great aptitude in getting the International Units Operating Companies working more closely together. Peter supported me by standing above the detail and providing strategic guidance. He is a great person to work with strategically, technically and personally.
Senior Learning & Development Consultant
Peter is a great global leader: He is a thoughtful strategic thinker, a hard-working manager but what I really admire is how he balances the changing needs of the business with a sensitively around the needs of his employees (on whatever continent they are based!). I have known him for many years and have appreciated his leadership competency alongside a great sense of team-ness with the top-teams he has worked. It is a pleasure to recommend him.
Technology Development Supervisor at BBC Monitoring
Peter heads up a diverse and globally dispersed operation at BBC Monitoring. He uses his tactical nous and strategic outlook to good effect, ensuring that the priorities of the here and now are met, whilst keeping a weather eye on the bigger picture. He is quick to spot opportunities, highly professional in his dealings, and a valued colleague and advocate. Recommended !
Senior Tutor, National Film & TV School, TV Broadcast Consultant, Video Producer and Trainer
Peter’s calm take on difficult issues, of which there are many in TV Presentation, was always appreciated. He could be relied upon to bring common sense to a situation and take much of the heat out of it. He is a calm and personable senior manager who earned the respect of all who worked with him. He is equally at home dealing with (very) senior management, people ‘on the ground’ and suppliers. Thoroughly recommended.
